A bound leather journal ends when the pages end. A refillable cover does not: the notebook comes out, another goes in, and the cover keeps going.
That sounds obvious until the first notebook actually fills up, at which point the practical questions start.
How the notebook is held
An elastic cord runs through the spine of the cover and through the fold of the notebook. To change books you slide the old one off the cord and the new one on. It takes about ten seconds and needs no tools.
The standard cover uses a modular elastic system and will carry two or three thin notebooks at once, depending on their thickness. If you want a different layout, we can add extra holes and extra elastics — but that has to be decided before cutting, not after.
What carries over and what does not
The cover carries over: the leather, the colour it has become, the initials if you had them stamped, and the elastic. The notebook does not. So the thing you chose carefully is the thing you keep, and the part that gets used up is the cheap part.
Over a few years that inverts the usual maths. A €65 cover that outlives eight €8 notebooks costs less per year than a bound journal you replace whole.
The elastic is the part that wears out
Leather outlasts elastic by a wide margin. That is why every cover ships with a spare cord in the same box: when the fitted one goes slack after a couple of years, you replace it and the cover looks new again in a different way.
Ask us for more spares at any point. It is a cord.
How long the cover part lasts
We have not owned one long enough to give you a number, and any workshop that gives you one is guessing. What we can say is what is designed to be replaced first: the elastic. Every cover ships with a spare cord, so that part can be changed without replacing the leather.
Treat the cover as the permanent part of the arrangement and the notebook as the consumable. That is the design.
One thing to decide early
A standard A6 cover holds A6 blocks, and a standard A5 cover holds A5 blocks. Read our A5 or A6 guide before choosing. If your notebook is another format, send its measurements through the custom-size request before ordering.
