Undyed Buttero reacts to everything — daylight, hand oils, the odd splash — and a trifold puts more of it against your hands than any other construction. Front, spine, flap, fore-edge: all of it is handled, every day.

So this cover moves quickly. Within weeks the flap and the front are warmer than the back. Within a few months the pale sand it arrived in is honey along every surface you touch, and by the end of a year the whole thing sits in deep amber with the fold lines darker still. No two end up alike, because no two people hold a notebook the same way.

It also records mistakes permanently. A water mark in the first month stays as a slightly darker patch under everything that follows. Most people who choose natural want exactly that; if you would rather not have it, whisky starts where this one is heading.
