A Ghost Wax cover can arrive with marks already in it. If you see a scratch before you have used the cover, it is reasonable to read it as damage. Here, that is not what the mark means.
Ghost Wax is a leather from Conceria Walpier with a pale wax layer over colour. The wax is not a permanent finish. Where you hold the cover, the wax rubs away and the colour underneath comes through. The pattern is not designed. It records how one person handles one cover, which is why no two Ghost Wax covers end up looking the same.
The mark is in the wax
There is a pale layer on top and leather colour below it. A scratch-like line may only disturb the first layer. It does not mean the leather underneath has been cut or worn through. Press the mark with your thumb and it settles back into the surface.
That distinction matters when the cover arrives. Natural Ghost Wax, Black Ghost Wax and Light Brown Ghost Wax can all arrive with a few marks already in the wax. That is normal, and it is worth saying plainly rather than leaving you to work it out: the mark is in the wax, not in the leather beneath it.
What your hands change
The wax does not disappear evenly, because you do not hold every part of the cover in the same way. On a plain cover, the spine, front corner and the edge you open from meet your hand first. On a trifold, the flap, fold and outer edge are involved too.
The colour underneath depends on the starting hide. Natural Ghost Wax has undyed leather under the pale surface, so a warmer honey-caramel tone comes through. Black Ghost Wax has a deep black base, which becomes smoother and more polished where the wax clears. Light Brown Ghost Wax starts over warm brown leather, with a caramel tone appearing under the frost.
The pattern belongs to the way you use it
Nothing has been drawn onto the cover to imitate wear. The wax comes away where your hand sits. Someone who opens a notebook from the spine will change one area first. Someone who grips the flap or front corner will leave a different record. The leather is doing the same thing in both cases, but the result will not be the same.
This is the part to understand before ordering. Ghost Wax is not the choice for a surface that stays even and untouched. The pale layer is temporary by design, and the colour underneath is meant to become visible through use.
Choose what comes out, not what goes in
The Ghost Wax versions in this guide start under the same pale frost, so the surface you see in a photograph is the least useful thing to choose by. What differs is what appears as the wax goes: honey-caramel under Natural, a smoother deep black under Black, warm caramel under Light Brown. Each is made as a standard cover and as a trifold.
If a new cover has a scratch in the pale surface, do not judge it by that mark alone. Check which layer it is in. If it blends back when you press it with a thumb, you are looking at the wax doing what it was made to do.
Ghost Wax is for someone who wants the cover to show its use. If you choose one, the first mark is not a defect to hide. It is the wax layer starting to do its job.
